Day Eight: Buffalo or American Bison

Thursday was a day for exploring. We started our trip with a trek through Custer State Forest on the Needle Hwy. We saw two herd of American Bison (Buffalo if you prefer) in the distance. We also made a stop at Needle's Eye which is a large rock formation that looks like a, you guessed it, the eye of a needle...

There were also several small, rather tight tunnels on the roads inside of Custer State Park.

We left Custer State Park for Wind Cave National Park. Wind Cave is one of only ten known caves in the world to contain "box-work" type formations. We took a tour of Wind Cave which included a visit to the natural entrance. It is the only known entrance to the cave that is large enough for a person to fit. I'm not entirely certain that it is large enough for a person my size...

Inside of the cave we saw the box-work formations and learned that geologists believe the formations are the result of calcite filling in the cracks from fractured limestone. After which the limestone was eroded away by water leaving the calcite "mortar" behind and creating the box-work formations.

At the start of our wind cave tour David was reluctant to go under the ground into the dark with the bats and the dark. We didn't see any bats and David forgot that he was afraid after a few minutes.

Our plan was to visit Mt. Rushmore later that afternoon, but by the time we got out of Wind Cave it was after 1:30 and we were hungry. We drove down to Hot Spring and stopped at a diner called Dale's Family restaurant. They had good burgers and passable--according to Amanda, the sweet tea connoisseur--sweet tea. Our waitress was also wearing a t-shirt which read "iPac Amendment 2.0" similar to the picture below.

After lunch it was back to Custer State Park and the "Wildlife Trail." Although, since it was after 3 p.m. by the time we got there we didn't see much wildlife. The bison had moved closer to the road when we passed them on our way to the Wildlife Trail and we did see a small herd of wild burro.

We didn't stop at Rushmore, but we did drive past it. It is an impressive site to see. I imagine we'll get a little closer later today.
